Work From Home (#WFH) by Interior Designer, Courtney Casey | Hinsdale Area Moms

#WFH
As if parenting isn’t hard enough, 2020 came along and slapped us square across the face. As parents try to juggle their already full workloads with e-learning, one thing is certain – our houses just aren’t functioning the way we need them to. I recently posted a poll to my Instagram and over 45% of people responded that they currently have 3-6 people (WOW!) working from home and/or doing e-learning on a daily basis with 81% of respondents commenting that they feel their house is ill-equipped to tackle their current #WFH situation. With most homes only really being designed with one main office space, it’s time to get creative. Here is how to make your space feel larger and more functional so your family can conquer this new normal!

I: En Suite Office
When you are tight on space but need somewhere quiet and private to take a work call, take inspiration from your favorite hotel room and create an en suite workstation. Whether you designate space in your master or guest bedroom, this extra workspace will add beauty and functionality (now all you’re missing is the room service).

II: Closet Conversion
Do you have any extra closet space that isn’t being used efficiently? Add a desk and some fun storage bins and décor to create the ultimate virtual learning classroom or workspace. The best part…you can shut the doors at the end of the day and the mess is hidden!

III: Built-in Breakdown
As the self-appointed #shelfie queen, I reeeeally love a well-styled bookshelf! However, a beautiful bookshelf is great for display but by opening up the lower space, you have an instant desk nook that creates a functional, fabulous workspace. I’ve done this with some of my clients and it adds instant functionality.Design by Monica Hibbs.

IV: Attic Build Out
If you have any unused or unfinished space in an attic, basement, over a garage, etc., consider building this out to something more usable. It will not only make your home feel larger, but would be a good investment for resale as well!

V: Add a door
While many of us have always dreamed of open concept homes, during a Zoom call with your boss or teacher you may want more privacy or noise reduction. (If you’ve had your toddler streak through a video conference, just know you are not alone.) Consider adding a glass door or a pair of french doors. The glass will give the feeling of an open space while still adding some privacy and noise reduction.Design by Amen Design Co.

VI: Kitchen Control Center
In the 90s and 2000s, built-in kitchen desk areas were all the rage but soon began to fade. I predict that we will see a resurgence of these kitchen control centers that allow us to be near our kids while they do e-learning while still being able to multi-task nearby. Much like a walk-in pantry, a walk-in desk space off of the kitchen might be something to add to your wish list if you are building or renovating.Source: Home Bunch Source: Better Homes and Gardens.

If nothing else, I hope we come out of this year learning how to work smarter and safer while appreciating this crazy, beautiful extra time together. Additional work spaces (and wine) will definitely help with that! For additional questions and tips, please follow along @courtneycaseyinteriors!
