Racism: Starting the Conversation with your kids, by Susan Stutzman, LCPC, RPT-S | Hinsdale Area Moms

This article was written by Susan Stutzman, a local mom and Child Therapist & Owner of Kid Matters Counseling. So thankful for her expertise as many of us may be wondering how to begin challenging conversations with our children.

The hard truth is that America has a history of racism, and, in order to work towards changing this big problem parents need to start talking about this problem with their children.

But, as parents, many of us don’t know how to talk to our kids about it.

If we’re going to tackle a systemic problem like racism it starts with working to help our children grasp some of this difficult reality.

Here’s one way to start today: Read books to your children about racism in America.

Reading books can be a great jumping-off point to listen to and learn about aspects of racism with your children. And, it is a great way to start an ongoing conversation about present-day issues.

Try starting with an age-appropriate book for kids like this one written specifically for kids ages 4-8: Something Happened in Our Town: A Child’s Story About Racial Injustice. And, for more book ideas for kids on racism check out this list.

Having conversations about racism with children will feel messy but it’s important. Encourage your kids to listen, ask questions, look for answers with you, grapple with reality and never give up hope for a better future.
