Clean Up Your Spring Cleaning with Tips from Nicole Christensen-Part 3 | Hinsdale Area Moms

It’s our final segment with local mom Nicole Christensen, health & wellness advocate with Beautycounter, on cleaning up the products in our home and how to do this simply and not feel overwhelmed. Please share any tips you’ve started to incorporate in the comments below. It’s progress not perfection, we know you have a lot on your plate – you’ve got this!
So it’s time to look at the products we use on our largest organ – our skin. Here are some great FYI’s about skincare:
*1938 was the last time the U.S. passed a major law governing the personal care industry.
*The E.U. bans or restricts 1,400 ingredients from personal care products because they’re linked to a health issue (hormone disruptor, carcinogen, etc).
*The U.S. has banned 30 to date.
Are you lost when it comes to ingredients in personal care products and if what you’re using is safe? You’re not alone. As mentioned last week, EWG.org is a great non-profit resource where you can look up your products and see how they rate, download their free Healthy Living App today. Top reasons to love Beautycounter:
*The Never List ™, over 1,800 ingredients they will never use in their product formulations.
*EWG Verified brand – the highest 3rd party standard in safety screening.
*Certified B Corporation – caring about people and the planet; sustainable packaging, shipping and responsilbly sourced raw ingredients.
*The products perform & are awesome!

Nicole’s top products to #switchtosafer:
1. Skincare: One thing I’ve learned in my six years with Beautycounter is to find a brand you like and use their entire line for the best results. Don’t cherry pick brands, if your skin is still dry or acting up, it will be hard to identify what product is not helping. Beautycounter has lines for all skin types and my personal favorite is our Countertime Collection – advanced anti-aging and hydration that uses bakuchiol instead of retinol. Many anti-aging lines depend on retinol for results and this ingredient has use restrictions, i.e. can’t use it when you’re pregnant, need to be cautious of sun exposure. Countertime has proven results and has been compared to La Mer (safer and at a fraction of the cost)!
2. Sun: Hawaii and Florida have recently banned Oxybenzone (a common chemical filter to block the sun in many sunscreens) as it’s been linked to coral reef collapse…definitely not an ingredient I want on my skin. Beautycounter sun products use non-nano zinc oxide, a natural filter to block the suns rays and keep you and the oceans safe! Goop.com recently highlighted our sun products and our cult-following, Dew Skin – Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 20, as the best clean and non-toxic sunscreen options. As warmer weather is coming it’s time to practice sun-safety!
3. Kids: Our little ones are in their prime developmental years and sadly many are experiencing allergies and eczema, bath time should be fun and we shouldn’t have to worry if the ingredients in our bubble bath are harmful. All Beautycounter kids and baby products are nut, gluten and soy free and we never use synthetic fragrance in any of our products. Plus if you have kiddos with long, easily tangled or thick curly hair, you will want to get your hands on Not a Knot Kids Conditioner ASAP!
4. Men: It’s not just women who use products and our men deserve safer, results-driven products too! From a Smoothing Shave Cream to a Conditioning Beard Oil – whatever manscaping he does, we’ve got him covered. With Father’s Day coming up this makes for a great gift too.
I hope you’ve gained some tips and learned some helpful information that empowers you the next time you go to clean your kitchen or put on some lipstick. Here’s to your health! If you’re interested in trying Beautycounter there is 20% off for all new clients, through 5/31. For information on that and/or any questions, contact Nicole at [email protected].
